The church of which I am a part is going through some changes. Some of those are transitions in specific, measurable ways of doing things. Many of the changes involve a shift in focus, thus a shift in identity. Change is never easy. It's turbulent, frequently messy, and often uncomfortable. People don't always agree on everything. The territory ahead seems uncertain. Surroundings look different and atmosphere's feel different. There is an unsettled sense around us.

However, purpose often arises from that which seems to be turmoil. In the midst of it all, once in a while, I'm beginning to hear this kind of phrase: "It's an exciting time." Even in the most wearying moments, I catch myself saying, "Well, at least it's not dull."

One hundred and forty-four posts ago I started this blog with the image of a canoe or kayak trip on an Ozark river. When the river's flow thrusts you into a set of rapids, you may find yourself unsettled by the turbulence of the water. You're wondering where submerged boulders will hit you, and you're bracing against the thrust of the mainstream, heading your vessel straight for a downed sycamore. You're praying you can paddle hard enough and fast enough to avoid swamping, and you may be saying, "Why in the world did I want to do this?" Those are the experiences, though, that make for the vitality of the trip. Those are the stories you tell, and those are the stretches in the river you hope to hit again. Life is in the rapids on a float trip. It's the same in this disciple-growing mission in the Body of Christ.

I'll see you around the next bend in the river, provided neither one of us tip and swamp!

Hi, Geoff. Please forgive the comment with no connection to the post---I somehow tripped across your blog here and thought I'd say howdy. I hope things are well--sounds like they are in the grandkid department at the very least. We've got 3 kids and my parents seem to be picking it up pretty quickly. Much grace and peace to you guys.

Change needs to happen in so many areas! Not only in procedure and implementation...but in the way we measure progress and success. We, as a church culture measure this by attendance and numbers in baptism. However, in this present age...these measurements have become obsolete. So many things compete for our time.. sports activities, family time, etc...Sunday is no longer a day put aside for God. It has become one more day to utilize for STUFF. Because of this...church has to fight for the attention...even from it's members. Maybe we need to think out of the box and stop "measuring" success by bodies present in worship. Maybe we need to make it more accessible to those who want to, but, can't be present. Those who are homebound.....those out of town....those who are intimidated to attend...those who are alone...those who are afraid of religion!!! Traditional church has it's purpose, however, maybe it's the BOX that's walls are preventing our growth. What about podcasts, youtube, website broadcasts that bring church to YOU? After all, it's the message of Christ, His grace and mercy, that people need!! Not the building!! Jesus never let the walls hold him in. He climbed mountains, walked on water...he went anywhere to whatever it took to save a soul!!! No walls, rules, committees, or religion held him back. He broke all the rules....
Instead...we as a church, are the defintion of INSANITY...doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results!!
